Frequency Asked Questions

Charging an EV takes time, and a great solution for EV drivers is to charge while they spend a night in your hotel or dine in your restaurant.  Providing free EV charging will attract new customers to your business and allow you to differentiate yourself from the competition.

In addition to this, the number of EV’s on New Zealand roads is constantly increasing.  The government has measures in place to encourage uptake and increase the number of EV’s on the road.

There are two main types available, Level 2 240V AC Charging, and Level 3 Super Charging 480V DC or higher.  For overnight charging at accommodation providers, we recommend Level 2 Charging – a charge to 80% will take approximately 4 to 8 hours depending on the vehicle.

Charging stations also have different types of cables and sockets, the recommended standard for Level 2 AC charging is for the charger to provide a Type 2 socket; the driver will be expected to provide their own cable that’s compatible with their vehicle.

For more information on charging connectors and standards for New Zealand, please see the NZTA website.

We strongly advise against this as it does not follow Worksafe safety guidelines for electric vehicle charging in non-domestic environments.  Charging from a household socket is the equivalent of running one or more large bar heaters on full, this uses a significant amount of power and could result in overload, especially if there are other appliances running from the same circuit that the socket is fed from.

Our charging stations are professionally installed by registered electricians, they are properly protected for the amount of power they will use, and are run from their own dedicated circuit.

Charging stations also deliver more power than a standard household socket, and in most instances will charge the EV at least twice as fast, if not faster.

For more information on Worksafe guidelines, please see the Worksafe website.

Most businesses start off with one charging station, additional stations can easily be installed depending on demand.

Currently we are offering the Delta Mini AC charging station for $1895 Inc GST with one year of warranty and one year of free premium access to our management system, charger install costs are additional.

You can also rent for $6.50 Inc GST per day on a minimum three year term. Install costs are included up to a total install cost of $800 Inc GST when renting a charger, you also receive free premium access to our management system for the duration of the lease.

Bulk and quantity discounts are available for the above options, please contact us to discuss.

The Delta Mini AC charging station is able to deliver up to 7.4kW and is ideal for overnight charging at accommodation businesses or top-up charging at restaurants and other businesses.

Installation is performed by our registered electrician and install costs can vary depending on the complexity of the install and location, for example distance from the distribution board and other factors.

All charging stations supplied by us are managed through our online management portal, from here you can view all charging sessions which have occurred, the amount of time spent charging, the energy usage in kWh, and any revenue earnt from credit cards.

Vouchers can be printed out and handed to customers just like you would with WiFi, you can set energy and time limits and also limit the number of sessions.

User accounts and RF ID fobs can be setup for more permanent controlled access.

Credit cards can be used directly via our web app, you as the business owner are paid monthly 50% of the total revenue if you are on our Free, Basic, or Professional plans, or 100% if you are on our Premium plan.

We recommend making your chargers free to use for customers only, offering free EV charging will attract more customers to your business.  The cost to you on your power bill will be minimal.  The most common EV, a Nissan Leaf can be fully charged for as little as $2.00 depending on the rate you pay with your electricity supplier.

If you still wish to bill for usage, we recommend including this in the cost of another product, eg a hotel room.

Yes you can, you can bill for this in kWh (kilowatt hours).

By default our system will bill your customers $0.50 Inc GST per kWh (kilowatt hour) when they use their credit card to activate a charging session, time is not billed.

If you are on our premium license plan, you can set this to any rate between $0.10 and $0.60 per kWh.  You can also include a per minute rate between $0.10 and $0.30 per minute if you wish.

These rates can be set on a per charger or per location basis.

If you are on our Free, Basic, or Professional licensing plans, we’ll set this for you and it can’t be changed.

Yes, we have a Free Charging feature built into our system especially for this. You simply select your business trading days and hours, the system will only allow free charging when your business is open, this feature is fully automated. Once an EV is plugged in, the charger will start automatically, and when your business closes, the charger will automatically stop any existing sessions and switch to pay only mode.

Yes you can, supported models are listed below, or contact us if your model is not listed so we can test and add support for it.  Your charging stations must support the OCPP open charge point protocol, 1.6J or higher.  They must also be connected to the internet, either over cellular 4G, or WiFi, or a cabled Ethernet LAN connection.

The following chargers have been tested and are compatible with our system:

Delta AC Mini Plus

First plug your vehicle into the charger, then load up our web app at Charge Zappie – you will need to sign up for an account if you haven’t already done so, and then add a valid credit card to your account.  Alternatively the venue you are at may be handing out voucher codes to enable their customers to charge for free – you can enter any voucher codes directly on our web app without the requirement to login or sign up.  Voucher codes are valid for a single session only.

Our standard cost is $0.60c per kWh for electricity usage with no time costs when you use a Zappie account and valid credit card via our web app.

Installing and maintaining EV charging stations is not cheap and there are overhead’s and ongoing costs associated – therefore this has to be passed onto our customers.

Some venues and other establishments where we have installed chargers, may offer free charging to their customers only, in this instance you will be given a voucher code or RF ID fob to activate the charger.

You can view our charger map via our web app or via our website.  Our map will show you which chargers are available, which are in use, and which accept credit card and or voucher codes.

The most common method is Visa or MasterCard via our web app, payments are deducted monthly for all charging sessions you have accumulated, the system will automatically email you a receipt each month.  Note that our charging stations do not accept cash or cards.

In some instances you may also be able to purchase voucher codes or borrow an RF ID fob directly from the venue or establishment where the charger is located – please note that we cannot control the prices they may charge (some may give these out free), not all of them offer this option.

Please try unplugging your vehicle from the charger and then wait 10 seconds, then plug your vehicle back in.  Try to activate the charger again. If there are still issues or you believe the charger has a fault, please let us know so we can investigate.

You will need to do “forgot password” from our web app and reset your password – you can reset your password either via SMS or your email address.  If you no longer have access to either of those, you will need to open a new account.

Unfortunately we are unable to replace lost voucher codes, you will need to see your venue for a new voucher code.  If you have lost any RF ID fob’s that were lent to you by the venue, they will most likely ask for you to cover the cost of replacing them.  Note any lost or stolen RF ID fobs reported to us will be disabled on our end as soon as we become aware.

You can also stop any charging sessions from our web app if they were initiated from your Zappie account or a voucher code, simply tap “stop” on the particular session you want to stop.  Unplugging your vehicle from the charger will also immediately stop the charging session; you will not be billed any further for that session.

Note that if the session was started using a voucher code, this code will no longer be valid for any future sessions.  If you wish to continue charging, eg you are popping out for a few minutes then coming back, you will need a new voucher code to continue.
